bf and i had a rest from work today! yuppee. we went to extend our support for zhenghua secondary school band (taught by weishan and hao) for the syf competition. and they done us proud with a gold award. i am so happy for them. whlist listening to the bands played, memories flooded my brain and emotions invaded my heart. 1999, i had my first competition in syf and that was also the first gold for shuqun secondary school, the second neighbourhood school to obtain gold award. moreover, back then there were only 15 gold bands in singapore, we were one of them. and we are the smallest gold band in singapore with a team of only 50. thinking back, the moment they announced the result was still vivid in my brain. "band number 42, shuqun secondary school, sss..... gold!" most of us teared of joy, jumping around in the auditorium, even if people mock at us we dont care.
we came a long way indeed, it took us 8 years for the gold medal. and i can say we worked really hard. because we were in 2 sessions last time, morning for higher sec, and afternoon for lower sec, but for band we needed combined practice. thus we combined practised whenever we could. we practised from 6.30am in the morning before flag raising in school. then during our recess break meaning no meals for us, then after class ended, all the way to 6pm. we did that everyday. the afternoon session students will nap in band room after the 6.30am practice, waited for the first recess break which is i think 10am-10.20am. then we slept again till 12.20pm where the morning classes ended. likewise for the afternoon session. on weekends, we practised from 8am to 5pm including sundays. the school didnt allow us to return on sunday, so 50 of us, climbed over the gate and sneaked into the band room on all sundays. but none complained, we were so enthusiatic, hardworking and united. dont ask me where we get all the energy. haha. those were the days... i had so much fun in school, committed to band wholeheartedly together with my besties (bf, liting, aihui, jasmine, hao, weiqiang etc...) who are with me till today. under the baton of our dearest miss doreen tan who have never gave up on us, our hard work finally paid off. we were presented the gold award in 1999.
10 years flew past, even now, whenever we shared the joy of the band days, we have endless to talk. memories really last a lifetime, that, no one can steal from me. besides all the hard work, we had camps, chalets, barbecues, concerts, sentosa excursions, interschool exchange annually. my time during my secondary school days were basically band and more band. but i absolutely heart them. my besties and i grew up together, seen each of us change over the years. amazing 11years of friendship. all thanks to shuqun secondary school band who brought all of us together. =)))
